The Boeing Model 367 (military C-97) was based on the Boeing B-50 which was based on the
B-29. The B-50 incorporated a larger tail, more powerful engines, and numerous improvements
gained from operating the B-29. The Model 367 utilized all the improvements of the B-50 but only
used the lower portion of the fuselage. Combined with the new upper section the aircraft was
given its distinctive lobe shape. There were 888 C-97s built (counting 55 civil 377s) between
1947 and 1958.


The USAF began using the Boeing KC-97G (Stratotanker) Flying Boom Tanker in 1950. The KC-
97G had two decks that were both pressurized and heated. The upper deck was completely open
and used for cargo carrying while the lower deck carried tanks for jet fuel. The KC-97G variant
carried under-wing fuel tanks with 592 being built. KC-97G 52-2782 was c/n 16813 and was just
of 205 KC-97G aircraft in the block with serials 52-2602/2806. Later in it’s career 52-2782 was
one of 22 KC-97Gs converted to an HC-97G, a search and rescue variant. Last assigned to the
305th Aerospace Rescue Squadron at Selfridge AFB, Michigan 52-2782 was delivered to AMARC
(Aerospace Maintenance And Regeneration Center – often referred to as The Bone Yard) on
April 11, 1972 and given reference number CHG513.
